Hell On Wheels: Codename Project One
Ian Fleming Publications, Ltd. has announced the commissioning of a brand new James Bond novel to be written and released on September 8th, 2015. This will be the 56th officially published James Bond story, following the 15 original works by Ian Fleming, and the 40 more continuation stories, short stories, or novelizations by other authors.
The story will be brought to the page by award-winning author Anthony Horowitz, who is one of Europe's most successful authors with over 40 books published in his name including his recent "The House of Silk" Sherlock Holmes story, as well as his popular Alex Rider series.

It's no secret that Ian Fleming's extraordinary character has had a profound influence on my life, so when the Estate approached me to write a new James Bond novel how could I possibly refuse? It's a huge challenge but having original, unpublished material by Fleming has been an inspiration. This is a book I had to write.
The inspiration for this new novel comes from one of several television treatments written by Ian Fleming himself. Many of these plots were incorporated into published collections of short stories, For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy and The Living Daylights. The television treatment Hell On Wheels will be the basis for Horowitz's novel set at the famous Nurburgring in Germany, where 007 must stop a Russian attempt to cause a crash involving famous British racing driver Stirling Moss sometime in the 1950's.
Stirling Moss is famously known as the "greatest driver never to win the World Championship," racing from 1951 to 1961. He is a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and still holds course records for his famed sub-11 hour 1955 Mille Miglia victory. He is widely heralded as an icon of post-war British patriotism.
Moss raced at the Nurburgring numerous times in his decade as a driver, but won in 1959 and 1961. Ian Fleming published his first Bond novel in 1953, and continued writing and publishing stories into the sixties. The wins in 1959 and 1961 may have inspired Fleming's television treatment. Below is a video from the official Stirling Moss website of him racing at the Nurburgring in 1956.
Other Connections To James Bond
Moss starred in a cameo role in an actual James Bond film titled Casino Royale (1967), which did not share any story elements with the first James Bond novel of the same name, and is not officially part of the Bond film cannon spanning from 1962's Dr. No up to the most recent film, Skyfall (2012). The film rights to the first James Bond novel were not owned by Eon Productions, parent of the official 23 Bond films, until 1999. It was later worked into a very close, albeit modern interpretation of the novel in Daniel Craig's first Bond film, Casino Royale (2006).
Moss won the 1959 Nurburgring 1000km race in an Aston Martin DBR1. He drove the famous car again 54 years later for the company's centenary celebrations in 2014, along side Daniel Craig in the famous Aston Martin DB-5, which has starred in 6 (7 if you include it featuring in the background of a scene in The World Is Not Enough ) Bond films. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the 1969 and 2006 models of the DBS, and the Vanquish have also featured in numerous Bond films.
Oh, and Stirling Moss and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! seem to share the same opinions !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

It is unknown, but perhaps not unlikely, whether Stirling Moss and Ian Fleming ever met, but the author did often incorporate real celebrities into his work. The press release states that Horowitz will be expanding on the original treatment, which should feature in full in the novel.
The new book will hopefully be an improvement over the recent attempts at continuing the story of James Bond, which all have struggled with Bond's character, age, and placement in the ever-growing fictional World of James Bond.
What Else Is New?
Bond 24 is currently in pre-production, with principal photography to begin in December of 2014. A new Young Bond novel has also been announced, as well as a new comic featuring everybody's favorite suave British spy. Stay tuned to BEYONDJAMESBOND for more Bond related news and analysis.

Stirling Moss, not Sterling Moss. There are also some other grammar and typing issues such as one in the beginning that should have been "Yeah, me neither.."

Wow. What a perfect man for the job. Horowitz is a fantastic action writer, and my youth was filled with his Alex Rider books (who was effectively a James Bond that didn't spend nearly as much time staring through the haze of casinos and about whom the fact that people didn't know him was much more believable).
I'll be reading this one.

I must be the exception, but i find the three Craig films to be the best Bond films since the Connery Originals.
He is a refreshing step away from the pretty boy with no ability to even look like they could back it up that was Remington Steele and The David Hasselhoff clone that proceeded him.
I find the current iteration of Bond to be the best and most BELIEVABLE ever.

This is a very common opinion. You have those authors who tried mimicking his style, those who went their own way, and most of the time the books land somewhere in the middle, with half of the book seeming like a copy of something you've already read, and the other half almost unrecognizable as Bond literature. Makes for some poor novels.

You are definitely not the exception. I love the direction the series has taken since Casino Royale. In fact I almost think some of the nostalgia in Skyfall felt like a step backwards.

I'd actually put him more or less on par with Timothy Dalton, and frankly, I like the two of them better than Connery. Nothing against the man himself, but a lot of the '60s films still had a bit too much camp for my taste.

For those interested in reading about Stirling Moss from the point of view of the man who was his friend, agent and manager, I can recommend Managing a Legend: Stirling Moss, Ken Gregory and the British Racing Partnership by Robert Edwards . It's an interest look at the business of racing.

Hello Justin,
Great article. The DBR1 with which Stirling Moss won the 1000km Nurburgring race is our car, chassis # DBR1/3. In its 13 race history - 4 of which were at Le Mans - it was driven 5x by Stirling Moss, 2x by Carroll Shelby, 2x by Jack Brabham, and 6x by Jim Clark.
The car is very much alive and well, and it is stunningly beautiful in person.
You should come see it some time, we'd love to have you.

"Moss starred in a cameo role in an actual James Bond film titled Casino Royale (1967), which did not share any story elements with the first James Bond novel of the same name"
The plot about the game of baccarat between Bond (Peter Sellers) and Le Chiffre (Orson Welles) came from the book - though not much else did...

I have to confess I am a bond nerd. I read every novel in order with no break to read anything else in between. How good are the non fleming books? I haven't read any of them it seems like they would suck not being from Ian Fleming himself.

Two things:
1. " Bond 24 is currently in pre-production, with principal photography to begin in December of 2014." Minor but critical mistake, Justin.
2. I haven't read any of the continuation Bond novels, but this one might give me the envie to tuck into them.
3. (Ok, I lied.) Your first post? Pretty damned good. You'll fit right in here, methinks.

Of the recent books I liked Devil May Care and thought it worked quite well as a follow on from the Fleming originals. Carte Blanche handled trying to reboot the Bond stories for the 21st century okay but suffered from poor characterisation of the villains and also Jeffrey Deaver was clearly hoping to write a series of Bond books which so far haven't materialised. Hated Solo though, weak story poorly told.

I love the idea of doing the James Bond stories as period pieces. Wish they had done it that way for Casino Royale. How about Live and Let Die's (the novel) scenes in the Jazz club in Harlem?

It helps that Casino Royale's plot followed the original pretty closely.

I think period pieces will forever be left for the novels. I just don't think current audiences would be too interested if the next set of Bond films go back in time. Part of the appeal of the films is that they coincide with real world events, in current locations that you or I could visit, and feature the newest technology, newest cars, newest "hot" actors & actresses, etc.
I, personally, would love to see one 'generation' of Bond films, perhaps with Craig's replacement as James Bond, take on the challenge of doing 3-5 period Bond films, perhaps even doing some honest interpretations of the original Fleming novels. Moonraker is my favorite book, and it has yet to be done justice on the big screen.
But it just isn't going to happen.
That said, when the film rights to Casino Royale were up for sale back in the 1990's, Quentin Tarantino reportedly put forward a lot of money towards buying them. His plan was to set the story in the 50's, the same as the novel, keep Pierce Brosnan as Bond, and film it all in black and white. He even approached the Eon Productions Producers of the official Bond films.
They declined and won the rights.

The best part of the Bond books (IMO) is Fleming's authorial voice. Often copied (and parodied - see the "Oy Oy Seven" series about a Jewish Bond) but never equaled.

Also, Moonraker's central conceit - a tycoon is building a rocket - is actually far more plausible now than it was when new. In the 50s rockets were the exclusive domain of governments.
